Food Pantry

“ . . . I was hungry and you gave me food” It is in response to these words of our Lord that we operate the Rosalind Hills Baptist Church Food Pantry.

Our mission is to provide food to those in our community who are unable for various reasons to obtain sufficient food for themselves or their families.

We are open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10AM to 12 Noon. Anyone who resides in zip codes: 24012-24014-24015-24016-24018 may visit and if they qualify can obtain USDA and/or purchased food.

The Food Pantry obtains most of our food from Feeding America Southwest Virginia Food Bank. Part of what we get is USDA food which comes at no charge. We are also able to purchase other food at a reduced rate. Occasionally we purchase from grocery stores or other retailers.
The funds to purchase food comes from donations from members and friends who give through the “Mission Store” or who give designated funds to the Food Pantry Ministry.

Because we receive a large percentage of food through the USDA food program we must operate by rules and regulations which they have implemented. This involves completing required forms for all clients in order to qualify them for USDA food. We are permitted to serve each client once per month.

We have a roster of over 50 persons who volunteer to work at least once per month in the Food Pantry in various capacities. This includes 3 persons who work directly with our clients when the Pantry is open. Others work at other times to bag food and keep the shelves neat. We also have a team that goes to the Food Bank to pick up food and deliver and unload it here. These folks also provide their own trucks to haul the food.
We also provide an adjacent Prayer Room that is staffed with volunteers who pray for and with the clients who request it.

Some interesting facts about the Food Pantry are:

  • Last year we served over 2400 families
  • These families consisted of over 7500 persons
  • Nearly 3650 bags of food where distributed
  • Over $ 20,000 was spent to fund the Food Pantry last year
  • 69,752 pounds of food was obtained from the Food Bank

Non-perishable food is always needed to stock our emergency food shelves. We distribute this food to those who are having a particularly difficult time and to those who are not presently living in one of the zip codes we serve with USDA food.

Each December the church sponsors a Community Christmas Party for the participants in the Food Pantry. Breakfast is served, food boxes are distributed, and a Christmas Program is presented by our Children’s Choir.
